What is Kylix? It is Delphi for Linux and Delphi for Windows. It would enable us to write cross-platform solutions. Just imagine, a single development tool to target two platforms! Kylix was officially announced on September 28, 1999. A press release from Inprise/Borland described it as a "a high-performance Linux application-development environment that will support C, C++, and Delphi development." This also means that the initial Kylix will be a Delphi for Linux. But, a C++ Builder equivalent for Linux will also follow it.

If you remember, in the Windows world, the first visual development tool was Visual Basic. Delphi arrived later and converted a whole lot of Visual Basic programmers to Delphi. But, it remained second just because it came later. Imagine what would have happened had it been released before Visual Basic. Now, on Linux, Kylix is going to be the first visual development tool! It will be second to none.

What is the VCL (Visual Component Library) that Kylix will be using? It's called CLX. It's intended for use on both Linux and Windows. Since it is designed for portability, it will have a great future. We can very well expect it to be ported to other platforms too. Using CLX, you will continue writing code for Windows while ensuring that your code works on Linux too, with minimum effort. If you are worrying about the third party components, you would be glad to know that many of them have already started working on creating components for CLX. You should have plenty of choices by the time it gets to be officially released. Moreover, the NetClx (part of CLX) will support Apache Web Application development.

At their 11th annual conference, Borland/Inprise developers actually showed a Kylix IDE running on a Linux box. A demo was also shown of a Kylix application on Linux. Then the same source code was used to create a Windows application. There were other demos too.
