After Y2K where are we headed?

Dear Valued Customers, Friends, Associates and Vendors,

As we are only 1 year away from the new Century and new Millenium (yes, it is one more year away) technology is taking a much more important role in our lives.

From Assembly to Fortran and COBOL to 4GL's and RAD Environments like Delphi we have come a long way. The future for us is full of web-connected, multi-tiered, object and relational databases with many diverse front-ends.

Most analysts are puzzled and are giving wildly differing outlooks on what's in the future. At InThink we believe the future is not in Linux or Windows or Java or Oracle etc. It is in using whichever tool is the most appropriate to get the job done. Long term alliances with a vendor are a thing of the past. When IBM didn't have the best PC solution vendors like Compaq and Gateway emerged. This phenomenon will repeat at a higher rate.

The rules and demands of business change rapidly and come at you like big waves during a tide. How do you then make decisions and choices of tools and vendors?

Simple.... change is like waves. Only the "best surfers" do well on them. So you should look for the "best surfer".

The "best surfer" usually is not the slickest, is not the one with the best sales team, it is not the "well known", it is not the "stable and has been around a while" type, it is also not the "very high market cap so if the analysts think it's a good financial bet then it's a good technical bet" type.

We think that contrary to traditional wisdom the "best surfer" is a vendor or technology provider exhibiting a few key criteria.
  1. Exceptionally sound yet supple underlying technical architecture.
  2. Energetic and Responsive staff.
  3. Alert and forward thinking management.
  4. Moderate employee turnover rate.
  5. Lively R&D Acitivity throughout the organization.
  6. A good touch of humility in the company culture.
Each of the above can benefit you in various ways. We list some of them. For interesting parallels we will list corresponding analogies to surfing :-)

1A. Will ensure you success in today's development needs.
1B. If you are not sound and supple you plop!

2A. The vendor has the ability to respond to challenges and provide competent solutions.
2B. This is not chess.

3A. In many situations the vendor will already be prepared as the future unfolds. When an unforeseen event occurs a forward thinking management will make much better decisions.
3B. You may not see it coming but it's still coming at you...

4A. Either extreme is an indicator of internal problems.
4B. A surfer who is constipated or has runny bowls shouldn't be on the beach!

5A. Well done R&D = growth. If they don't innovate they stagnate. The vendor should have a track record of many successes and a few mistakes. Preferrably the mistakes should be only the kind that are caused by being too far ahead of their time. Avoid ones that "don't see the obvious" and invent things only useful in their own virtual view of reality.
5B. On every wave use a fresh new approach to go farther.

6A. Vendor must know the value they bring to you but also must not forget that somewhere someone already has something better. A vendor who claims to be right all the time won't pay attention to your problems and will attempt to force inappropriate solutions on you.
6B. If you think there is no wave better than you, think again! "My techniques are perfect! There's something wrong with these waves!"

We at InThink have worked hard and kept pace with the incredible growth in technology today. We have maintained our position as a leading edge technology provider by constantly innovating and investing in the technologies before they became the norm. We are actively working in the areas of n-tier architecture, e-commerce, encryption technologies and web-based transactions handling systems. Sometimes we make mistakes or mis-read the waves but we learn from them and recover and go on to the next one. Once in a while some of us play Chess too. :-)

Do you need to make technology decisions and choices affecting your company's future? We are happy to help. Do you need a partner to go along for the ride? We'll take you up on the challenge! Email: info@inthink.com

We hope your holidays have been fun and we look forward to working with you in the New Year!

All of us at InThink wish you all a very Innovative, Creative, Propsperous and Joyous New Year!
